Freedom is not “saying bad things” to a leader of a nation.
Ataturk was not a leader like the others.Still you can see his photos in people’s wallets and their shops on the wall.
Open Youtube and search “Midnight Express”.You will see a person.Listen him and learn the truth.

Someone has uploaded a insultfull video of Atatürk therefore turkey has blocked Youtube . what an intelligent solution. every people except turks will see it and we wont be able to react . just another stupid decision of stupid turkish laws. by the way i am turkish and live in turkey and i accept it : yes we are idiot . Ataturk himself wouldnt let Youtube to be blocked. i think this is the succes of the people who uploaded the video . yeah a full country can not reach to youtube anymore . if turks keep to be idiot there will be much more victories of turk and ataturk haters .

Unbelievable weak behavior, freedom of speech is a right and cannot be banned nor forbiden by anyone on this planet. Of course I believe that freedom of speech goes together with respect and respectful behavior, but to ban this kind of stuff will make it go underground and thus much more dangerous. There should always be room for discussion. The more people disagree with a certain video and/or picture, the more likely it will vanish by itself.

After having lived in Turkey for about 8 years I know that Turkish people don’t ,usually, think for themselves. The are educated by brainwashing. Not by thinking. So they are taught that Atatürk, who only has been their “leader” for about 15(?) years, was the best thing that has ever happened to them. That he wasn’t the reason that 10.000s of people have been killed. And if by accident they start thinking they say: yeah, but is was necessary, it was for a good cause. Being a teacher in Turkey myself I know what I am talking about.

Well being a European by birth I would say: please don’t let Turkey enter the E.U., not yet. Don’t get me wrong: I chose to live here in Turkey because I love it here, and the Turks but with their double standards they can cause a lot of problems. They generally ignore things they don’t want to see and they are good at it.

Mind you I used the words generally and usually. There are enough Turkish people who do their best to live in the 21st century.

Well, I’m not turkish, but i live in turkey for now, great people, diverse culture, you can’t really
put turkish people in one category! each city each town differs, overall they’re nice people,
and a very hard working people that i myself think wow how can they handle this,
the only thing turkey needs, is to let loose and be exposed to other cultures and languages
Media wise, the movies in english need to be translated in captions!!! so they can learn
from TV shows, and Movies at least!!! i wish they would do that, turks aren’t dumb
it’s the system that makes people dumb by blocking their minds..
i suffer to find a person that knows a few words of english, unless you’re in a major city,
the turkish media and the education system is destroying generation after generation,
I mean growing up in IRAQ i thought the people were stuck ups there, but no
i mean if i compare it to here it’s a shame..And even being under saddam our education system
was and still british, regular schools teach english from 1st grade, some from 5th they won’t speak it well but they would have an idea, it’s really up to them weather to learn it fluently or not, and the media there
would NEVER slay an english spoken TV show or a Movie by dubbing, all you would see is captions
it resulted in making whoever visits iraq comfortable and never gets lost because if people don’t speak it well
they would at least show you the directions IN ENGLISH well i’m talking when it was a somewhat normal country. I feel so alone :(, i learned some turkish phrases but
yeah, it barely gets me by for cigarettes buying etc :(

    Johnny,

i am really sorry for u gays. if ure talking about brain wash education in turkey i mean u dont know anything about turkey plus most important thing is if u gays dont know anything about ATATURK, ure more than idiot i am really sorry for u gays :(. ATATURK is the leader who had victories from France, England, Italy ( this list will go up and up). this must be the reason i think ure talking like that about him. THAKS TO SOME OF U BCS URE REALLY KNOW WHO IS HE. gerizekali olupta turk olmakta zor arkadaslar oyle atip tuttugunuz adam sizin nenenize girecek fransiz ingiliz italyan seylerinden kurtardi biraz adam olun. tepki vereceginize ulkeniz insanindan idiot diye bahsediyorsunuz.

  11. Ozan Kayikci Says:

Well, saying “we are idiots” is not actually a nice thing, but the correct act should not be ignoring.
We are totally brainwashed, our system makes every single movement like it’s trying to leave us in ignorance. Denying that wont do any good. Turkey is not only you or your friends or relatives etc.
Atatürk is not a person to be discussed. And I would be glad if Nikita explains what she meant by saying 10.000s getting killed? Hope you didn’t say that about our independence war?
But I would like to hear what you mentioned. May be you have a point to listen, but at the beginning we should remember that Ataturk’s one of the most used mottas is “Peace at home, Peace in the World.” Also saying, if not for independence, war is the most stupid and disgusting thing in the world. Anyway, I’m not here to defend Ataturk, and he does not need to, history tells everything. But I would like to hear your point if you read this.

Freedom of speech is one of the biggest issues we just couldn’t handle in Turkey. That is a fact. You cant criticise many things, may be not by law but by public react you would step back.
But, insulting a nations leader, a nations “saviour”, a nations founder, a nations chief-teacher, is neither an idea nor deserves freedom to. If you wanna talk about blocking Youtube beacuse it has a video which was not suitable, fine, thats great. This is showing us the laws considering the cyber world is not understood by Turkish law, that Youtube is an uploaded-content site.

But, Ataturk’s being not criticiseable, is a different issue and shouldn’t be involved before learning about him a lot. After that, you would see that you have nothing to criticise.. He is not Roosevelt or anyone whose name can be seen near him. He is not just a leader..

    Thanks for reading.

sorry about this but I think I should write in turkish about this subject.

Can’t you speak English ? ooh I know you’re turkish. Try to invent something instead of wasting time.

Name 1 (one) thing Turkey has contributed to the world in the last 100 years (besides ayran and doner)

    See ya…

  14. Osman S Borutecene Says:

@bob, it’s not a matter whether Turkey has contributed something to the world or not. even if Turkey had contributed enormous amount of knowledge, invention, etc. it would be again not a right thing to exercise that censorship.

I am turkish. I think that blocking youtube because of an insulting video towards Ataturk is terribly wrong. I love and respect Ataturk. He has done so much to our country, he has given so much. So instead of blocking youtube I would have liked the chance to be able respond to the people who put that video there. To help them understand that what they did was wrong. Blocking youtube in turkey is just what theese guys wanted. This way they win. And even though we dont see the video other countrys do. I think turkish people know ataturk enough to not believe in this kind of stuff but foreign people dont know this. Most of them probably dont know ataturk and that is sad. We should fight instead just like always our country chooses what is the easiest. Not only us but every single person should know the person he was. Ataturk hep kalbimizde.

  18. Melis Says:

By the way bob Ataturk was a great contribution to the world we can learn a lot of things from him. Maybe u should too.. What did america contribute? The murder of thousands of people in Iraq, Vietnam….
